Travel journalist Andrew Murray from Top Wire Traveller recently purchased a Cel-Fi GO and spent some quality time breaking it down to work out the pros and cons, tips and hints to optimise the unit.  This is a great article for self-installers because it clearly shows you where you can go wrong, and provides you with helpful hints so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.

Good points to note from the article:

  • It is vital to set up your antennas correctly – not isolating your antennas will mean your unit will not perform well or not perform to its greatest capacity.
  • He also advises how you can use the 4G signal to connect online, by simply flicking a switch on the device (see Switching Coverage)

The Cel-Fi GO mobile version is a great addition to a 4×4, as it’s designed to significantly boost voice quality and increase data speeds for moving vehicle applications.

The Summer edition of the 4×4 Australia Magazine and their website carry more information about Cel-Fi GO and it’s ability to boost your mobile coverage signal when you are out and about in the bush or the beach.  The unit gives up to 70dB of system gain, will only start boosting once the mobile signal drops below -80dBm (3G) or -96dBm (4G), and features a Bluetooth WAVE App for iPhone, Android and computers.

Illegal Repeaters – How to Decide

Illegal repeaters/boosters abound.  They can block mobile signal reaching your neighbours, and they can even bring down phone towers cutting signal to thousands of users. Penalties for operating illegal repeaters range from fines to jail terms.

Cel-Fi products differentiate themselves from illegal products by being in the public forum; the product is supported with product reviews and media releases etc.  You will find the illegal companies do not do this.

Find below a letter from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) listing the companies who sell illegal products: Mobile Repeaters Australia, Signal Boosters Australia, Amplify Australia.  They operate virtual premises and phone numbers that look like they are based in Australia or New Zealand, in reality they are based overseas making it very hard to shut them down.  Ebay has also recently banned all illegal repeaters from sale on their platform.
